Jeff Little is coming back to the Cook Shack! If you were in the crowd last a year ago when Jeff wowed us with his music, humor and style, you’ll want to be back in the room for this show. He is certainly one of the most fun, interesting, talented and accomplished Appalachian musicians around, and we’re lucky that he enjoys playing for us in the intimate Cook Shack setting. Jeff is in constant demand as a performer, simply because he has few peers when it comes to playing the piano. As thousands of fans will testify, nobody does it better than Jeff!
Jeff is well-known in the acoustic music world where he has earned a serious reputation for his intricate and wonderful piano playing. He is a long time friend of Doc Watson and his music has been greatly influenced by Doc the man and by Doc the guitarist. In fact, Jeff performed at Merlefest with Doc only a few weeks ago. He also performs regularly with Wayne Henderson, and it is obvious when they team up that they both enjoy each other’s skill and style.
A Little About Jeff Little…
Jeff Little grew up not too far from the Cook Shack in Boone, North Carolina. His father ran a music shop, and by the age of fourteen, young Jeff was playing piano professionally. Jeff knows blues, rockabilly, jazz, and a little rock. But he grew up with the sounds and musicians of traditional country folk music and counts Doc Watson as a personal friend and musical colleague. He has played around the world and been featured at the Smithsonian and on NPR.
Jeff has recorded two CD projects, and he’s also featured as guest artist on many more. His musical style is a mixture of all varieties of musical approaches and styles and he has a lot of musical surprises up his sleeves.
Jeff’s music is strongly flavored with the variety of music he heard at his Dad’s music shop. He’s known especially for his ability to capture the tone and feel of Appalachian fiddle tunes, something not commonly performed on the piano. As well, you’ll notice that his playing is marked by speed, precision and clarity.
Since Jeff is so versatile, who knows what music he has up his musical sleeves, but you might expect to be treated to songs like Billy in the Lowground, Alabama Jubilee and Uncloudy Day, but also expect things like Orange Blossom Special and Minor Swing, not to mention some Jeff’s own great original tunes and songs. His music has taken him all over the USA, plus he’s performed in France, Sri Lanka, Oman and Tanzania, and he’s been featured at the Smithsonian in Washington and on National Public Radio.
Here’s what critics are saying about Jeff…
“Jeff Little tore the place apart with his wondrously quick and articulate piano style. He is tricky and playful, yet always intelligent and richly melodic." -The Boston Globe
"Jeff Little is a remarkable musician, steeped in the tradition of his native Blue Ridge, yet also a virtuosic and eclectic innovator." -Nick Spitzer, National Public Radio
"Jeff Little delivered impressive unaccompanied versions of both "Orange Blossom Special" and "Whole Lot of Shakin’ Goin’ On." Just as Doc Watson once adapted fast tricky fiddle tunes to the guitar, so has Little to the piano." -The Washington Post
"I heard Jeff on National Public Radio’s Folk Masters and was blown away. It was like hearing Jelly Roll Morton, Doc Watson or Earl Scruggs for the first time. You have to wonder how so much sound can come from one instrument." -J.D. Dooley, Watauga Democrat
