Upcoming DVD -- Why Old Time? A Journey Through an American Musical Art Form.

Dean Reed, son of Henry, in middle
While enjoying the Phlegar Farm jam last week, I got to enjoy listening to Dean Reed (son of OT fiddler Henry Reed and pictured at left) play guitar.  I also learned of a film project that Old Time fans will be interested in. The name of the upcoming DVD is: Why Old Time? A Journey Through an American Musical Art Form.

In the words of the website (http://www.whyoldtime.com/aboutwhyoldtime.htm): "This film focuses on the relationship between the music and its fans, examining why so many folks travel long distances to festivals, why they spend so much time learning songs written decades or longer before they were born and why the musical tradition established hundreds of years ago is being preserved by people today. We explore the sense of community based around the music and why people gather weekly to play Old Time music and commune with each other form house concerts to huge festivals. We also address the tremendous wealth of knowledge fans retain on not just a given song, but where it came from, variations of it, and musicians that were known to play it."

You can learn more at the website link here. The DVD is due out winter of 2008 for $20 + $4 s/h. You can pre-order for $11 now +$4 s/h.
